MISSISSAUGUA, ON - August 5, 2015 - The annual PPG Dream Car awards were presented at the Goodguys 18th PPG Nationals held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, July 10-12. The two winners, a 1955 Chevy pickup owned by Joe and Josh Bailey of Maryville, Tenn., and a 1940 Ford pickup owned by Robert Anderson of Savannah, Ga., stood out in a field of spectacular cars and trucks vying for one of the most esteemed prizes on the show car circuit.

The three-day PPG-Goodguys event displayed more than 6,200 custom cars and trucks and attracted over 75,000 auto enthusiasts. The highly respected PPG Dream Car awards are given to the two vehicles (cars or trucks) that best exhibit the outstanding use of color, design, gloss and execution in a paint job. Given the prestigious nature of the award, the competition is always spirited, with builders doing their best to attract the judges’ eyes—and votes.

Joe and Josh Bailey, a father-son team, presented their flawless ’55 Chevy pickup. The truck was acquired by an uncle in 1972 and handed down through the family. The Baileys took possession of it in March 2014 and worked evenings and weekends in their home shop to give the Chevy its redo. They achieved the award-winning finish using PPG’s DELTRON® 2000 DBC Basecoat and DCU2002 CONCEPT® High Solids Polyurethane Clear with PPG colors Fender Guitar Surf Green and 1957 Chevrolet India Ivory.
 

Robert Anderson entrusted his Ford pickup to Steve Legens at Legens Hot Rod Shop in Martin, Tenn. The shop turned the truck into a winner, customizing it and sandblasting the body to repaint it a custom-mix glossy green. Legens and painter Keenan Hailey chose PPG’s ENVIROBASE® High Performance waterborne basecoat along with water-compatible GLOBAL REFINISH SYSTEM D8152 Performance + Glamour Clearcoat and D8372 Slow Hardener to produce the truck’s head-turning appearance and earn a PPG Dream Car award.

MISSISSAUGA, ON - August 19, 2015  PPG Automotive Refinish has introduced VWM500 Custom Midcoat, a solvent-borne, VOC-compliant VIBRANCE COLLECTION® product formulated exclusively for application with waterborne basecoats. VWM500 allows painters to use Vibrance Collection special-effect pigments and dyes to seamlessly create multiple color layers—including custom candies, micas or pearl midcoat layers—over waterborne basecoats. VWM500 is particularly effective when the custom finish may be performed over an extended period of time; it can also be used to isolate graphics.

“VWM500 gives painters new freedom to create show-stopping, head-turning finishes,” said Steve Lehner, PPG product manager. “With VWM500, painters can take advantage of the array of Vibrance Collection offerings and allow their imaginations to really take off with bold colors and dazzling effects. And they can use it with waterborne products including ENVIROBASE® High Performance basecoat. We’re very excited to see what PPG customers do with this new midcoat.”

Lehner added that VWM500 is fast-drying, easy to apply and indispensable for having full-range, VOC-compliant capability when developing custom finishes. In due course, VWM500 will replace VWM5555 in VWB Vibrance Collection formulas. As the matches are completed, VWM500-compatible formulas will be released.
